
Counselling conducted at any Emeris site is provided by a registered professional, registered with either the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), as a registered counsellor or with the South African Council for Social Service Professionals (SACSSP), as a registered social worker and therefore uphold the code of ethics and code of confidentiality.
Counselling sessions are regarded as strictly confidential and will not be divulged / disclosed to any other party / third person outside a counselling session, without the consent of the student. All students complete a consent form before / upon their first session with the Student Wellness Specialist and / or Student Counsellor, which states the nature and objectives of the psychological services and expectations to confidentiality.
A Student Wellness Specialist and / or Student Counsellor may disclose confidential information:
- Only with the permission / consent of the student concerned.
- When permitted by law to do so for a legitimate purpose.
- To appropriate professionals and then for strictly professional purposes only.
- To protect a student or other persons from harm.
It is imperative for the Student Wellness Specialist and / or Student Counsellor to ensure the records of the sessions are stored in accordance with the professional and statutory requirements for confidentiality and security. The Student Wellness Specialist and / or Student Counsellor is to ensure that any processing of your personal information is in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPI Act).
