What are Formative and Summative Assessments?
Formative Assessments |
- A formative assessment is an assessment that develops learning through the provision of feedback during the learning period.
- It is used to improve learning and to give feedback to students on progress made
- Is a graded assessment that is included in your Cumulative Assessment Mark (CASS) and:
- Contributes to the final mark for your module
Summative Assessments |
- A summative assessment is an assessment that measures learning against intended outcomes at the end of the learning period.
- It is a formalised assessment that is used to certify the attainment of a certain level of education.
Below are the types of formative and summative assessments that may be used for your modules:
Written on Campus Assessments (Invigilated Assessments)/ Take-Home Assessments | These are completed under standardised invigilated, controlled conditions. They are used are used so that you can demonstrate recall and application of a limited amount of knowledge under supervision and without peer collaboration. |
Oral Tests | An oral test is an assessment attempted under standardised, controlled, invigilated conditions on certain qualifications. |
Assignments | Tests your conceptual understanding of your module content by requiring responses to questions that require exposition and application of theory. |
POEs | This is a curated collection of other assessments from the same module. Parts of it are presented and assessed collectively to demonstrate and determine learning achievement. |
ICE | his is made up of various tasks as instructed by the lecturer. You must complete at least 4 ICE tasks per module where ICE is listed on your Programme Assessment Schedule (PAS). |
Presentations | These would normally be accompanied by a submission of a document either individually or in groups and require you to orally present an idea, argument, or the outcomes of an investigation. |
Parts | Instead of an assignment, you may have individual tasks/parts which will make up the contribution of an assignment. |
Practical Assignments | These are more hands-on, or simulation-based. You can learn more about practical assignments in the PDIIE009 Assessment and Strategy Policy and the IIE006 Work-Integrated Learning Policy. |
Timed Tasks | These are released on the student portal for 24 hours and you will have a set amount of time to complete this task in your Learning Management System (LMS). |
Projects | These are typically practical in nature and assess to which certain skills outcomes have been achieved and demonstrated in an applied manner. |
Tasks | This assessment allows you to show focused competence that can be used to build a more general demonstration of knowledge and its application. |
