What is a Discontinuation Assessment?
A Discontinuation assessment is an additional (normally third) summative assessment opportunity given to a student who is registered on an offering that is being phased out, if they have not succeeded in the ordinary opportunities offered.
When does a discontinuation assessment apply? |
When The IIE elects to discontinue a qualification, curriculum or mode of offering to new students on a campus, at a brand, or in its entirety, the offering is phased out over a period, not exceeding the maximum completion time, and these are referred to as “phase-out” arrangements. For qualifications that are being discontinued or phased out, a discontinuation sitting/resubmission assessment opportunity is made available to students as one final additional attempt to complete the module where the student has failed the first summative assessment sitting and the supplementary assessment opportunity (if the student qualified).
What are the rules for a discontinuation assessment? |
The discontinuation assessment opportunity must be applied for via the student hub, must be attempted in the next available sitting/ resubmission opportunity and is assessed as a summative only (all other formatives contributions are disregarded). This opportunity is capped at 50% and the capped summative attempt will become the final overall module mark.
If a student does not attend/submit the discontinuation assessment opportunity in the next available sitting of that year’s academic cycle, the student’s record will be updated to reflect “absent”, and the student will effectively receive 0% for the assessment. Their former overall module result will stand, a grade of F will reflect, and the student will be required to repeat an equivalent/ replacement module, or transfer onto a new curriculum where there is no equivalent/ replacement available.
Discontinuation assessment dates can be found on the Programme Assessment Schedule (PAS).
