What are the habits of a successful online student?

  • Resilient - Resilience is the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. Being resilient does not mean you never experience stress, emotional upheaval, and suffering.  If you don’t do well in your first assessment, do not be discouraged.  Learn from this experience so that you are better prepared for the next assessment.
  • Active – be proactively active with your studies.  This is your journey for your own benefit.  Make this journey a pleasant journey by being an active participant in your studies.
  • Organised – time management skills.  Online studying requires huge amounts of self-discipline.  Make sure that you are master of your own academic destiny.
  • Problem-Solver – being an online student comes with challenges.  However, these challenges will enable you to overcome adversity and learn problem-solving skills which will be sought after in the workplace.
  • Adaptable – life happens.  Sometimes timetables change, or assessment dates must change.  Use this change to experience how change can add value to your life.
  • Good Communicator – communicate professionally in your emails to your lecturer and any of the Academic or Operational staff.  Reach out to staff when you are unable to resolve an issue, giving all relevant details.
  • Lifelong Learner – in today’s fast paced world we need to keep learning.
  • Self-managed – manage your study time and your personal time.  Self-managing your studies will equip you with your qualification which you have earned through dedication and determination.
  • Interactive – get involved in the online activities and group work.  Learn about your fellow students.  Your fellow students are part of a greater network.
  • Problem solver – blaming someone else for not being able to do something is not helping you in any way.  Try to work through the issue, and if you can’t resolve the issue, then reach out professionally to your lecturer or one of the academic team.
  • Independent – this is your journey.  You need to take ownership.  No one else can study and earn the qualification but you.
  • Prioritise studying during the duration of your academic journey.  Don’t allow yourself to be side tracked by a social life, social media and family.  This is a short time space in a lifelong learning journey.  Prioritise you and your studies.
