Are the IIE Bachelor of Engineering Degrees accredited with the Engineering Council of South Africa?

The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) accredits all engineering qualifications offered in South Africa. When ECSA accredits a new qualification, they follow a three-step process:

  •     Endorsement

Before a qualification runs or admits any students, ECSA will review the curriculum, module outcomes, assessment structures, staffing plans and many other details of the qualification. If they are happy that high quality planning has been done, they will endorse the qualification so that it may begin accepting students.

The IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering (SAQA ID: 118321) offered by the IIE is currently endorsed by ECSA.

  •    Provisional Accreditation

When the first cohort of students have completed the first half of the qualification ECSA will conduct a site visit. At the site visit the ECSA panel will interview academic staff, support staff, management, and students, as well as review a range of evidence provided by the institution. The panel will then submit a report to the ECSA Accreditation and Training Committee and if they are satisfied with the quality of the qualification, they will award the qualification with provisional accreditation.

  •     Regular Accreditation

Once the first cohort of students has completed the qualification, ECSA will conduct another site visit. The panel will again interview academic staff, support staff, management, and students, and will review the evidence provided by the institution. If the ECSA Accreditation and Training Committee are satisfied that the qualification meets the accreditation requirements specified by ECSA, regular accreditation will be awarded for a period of five years.

ECSA conducted their first regular accreditation visit of the IIE on 11 & 12 September 2024. The IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (SAQA ID: 101433) and the IIE Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (SAQA ID: 101732) were both awarded regular accreditation that will be valid until 2029.
