What are the current research projects running in the School of Computer Science?
- SmartHydro:
The SmartHydro study focuses on hydroponic farming, growing of vegetables and strawberries in grow tents. Its primary aim is to transition from previously simulated studies to real-world implementation, exploring how rural farmers can collaborate with AI on IoT technologies in agricultural production. The project investigates the design requirements of AI for rural African settings. Initially launched in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, the project has since expanded to include partnerships with the Namibia University of Science and Technology, the University of Cape Town, and a youth and science centre in George. - Move with Me:
With IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, connected intelligence and hyper connectivity, to create and produce a fully functional smart cape for children. This cape will aim to address the decreased levels of activity in children by using sensors to encourage movement and activity which can be tracked, to aid in development of motor skills.
