Are articles always for 2 years?

Articles, or the period of apprenticeship whereby candidate legal practitioners are prepared for legal practice, are normally undertaken for a period of two years.  The Legal Practice Council does require a period of two years of articles for admission as an attorney.  However, there may be exceptions – the most common exception being that candidates who have completed the six-month-long programme at the School for Legal Practice need only complete one year of articles with an attorney.  (The Law Society of South Africa established the Schools in 1990 and implements them via its Legal Education and Development Division (LEAD)).
